FUEL UP MINISTRY
Our Fuel Up Ministry provides food for weekend meals to students at Chatham Middle School who are eligible for free and/or reduced-priced meals. Currently, we provide approximately 40-50 bags each week. We pack at 1:00 pm on Thursday most weeks unless the school schedule changes for a holiday, etc. In addition to bag packing, other tasks include ordering the food, picking up the food, delivering food bags to Chatham Middle, and disposing of food packaging.
Summer Nutritional Assistance for Chatham Kids
FUMC works with CORA Ministry as a distribution site. The Ministry provides weekly meals for eligible children whose families are food insufficient. FUMC volunteers work together packing the fruits and vegetables and distributing them with the food boxes on the designated distribution date. We are blessed to serve approximately 150 children at our site.
Apostle Build – Habitat for Humanity
First United Methodist Church partners with the Apostles’ Build Program and Chatham County Habitat for Humanity by contributing labor, financial contributions, and prayer support to assist in building a home for a local family. Chatham County Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical housing ministry working in partnership with economically challenged individuals and families to eliminate poverty housing. Habitat for Humanity brings together people from diverse social and economic backgrounds to provide decent, affordable housing. Simply put, Chatham Habitat builds houses, using donations and volunteer labor and sells these houses, at no interest, to families who could not afford to buy a house in the traditional manner. Habitat provides “a hand up, not a hand out.”
Angel Tree Project
Each year FUMC families, pick an “Angel” from the church’s “Angel Tree” to make Christmas a little brighter and help make Christmas wishes come true for children in our community. Children that are part of the “Angel Tree” program typically range from newborn to 12 years of age. The “Angel Tree” mainly focuses on clothing, toys, and stockings items.
Bell Ringer for Salvation Army
FUMC members support the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Drive every year at Christmas time by signing up to ring the bell outside at a local community business, which is usually Wal-Mart. Members are allowed to sign up for their dates and times they would like to volunteer. The funds raised during this time make a year-round impact in our community by providing social services assistance, supporting homeless shelters, disaster relief efforts, children’s programs, rehabilitation services, anti-human trafficking, and more!
West Chatham Food Pantry
FUMC supports the West Chatham throughout the year. Each month the church collects a set items that is delivered to the food pantry at the end of month. During the ACC basketball season, the church hosts a competitive canned food drive based on local ACC teams and all proceeds are given to the food pantry as well. The food is used to supplement families in need and the local Fuel-Up program for the western part of Chatham County.
